The School Travel Company is very pleased to announce that Sebastian’s Action Trust will continue to be its chosen charity in 2016/17.
A Young Boy’s Dream
Sebastian’s Action Trust was established to make the dream of a brave young boy, Sebastian Gates, a reality. In the month before he died, at the age of nine, Sebastian launched a fundraising drive to establish a holiday home that would provide somewhere exclusively for families to spend precious time together, away from the hospitals and punishing treatment programmes that govern the lives of cancer patients and others with life-threatening conditions. Sebastian believed the holiday home should be available all year and should offer breaks free of charge to families with sick youngsters. Sebastian’s Action Trust has now created the UK’s only purpose-built facility that will offer respite holidays to very sick children and their families, enabling precious time to be spent together.
Take a tour of Bluebells, the Trust’s purpose-built respite facility for seriously ill children and their families – the only one of its type in the UK.
The house, called The Bluebells, has been built in the pretty Hampshire village of North Waltham. It opened in July 2011. Nothing like this previously existed in the UK, making The Bluebells the first of its kind and Sebastian’s vision all the more exceptional. The video below gives you a brief, guided tour.
In 2012 Sebastian’s Action Trust received a Special Recognition Award at the Pride of Britain Awards, and in 2014 it was awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service – the ‘MBE’ for voluntary groups. See here for more details.
The Trust also gives practical support in many different forms to children battling with life-limiting illnesses and provide meaningful assistance at critical times to families exhausted by the stresses of hospital life and their child’s gruelling treatment. Since opening last year Bluebells has welcomed families from all over the UK, and we know that your support will be warmly welcomed by both the Trust and the families that make use of the facilities. The Trust have produced a number of films over the years that give more of an insight into their work. Please visit their website, but be warned – you will probably need a tissue handy.
We believe that the Trust’s aims are particularly appropriate for a company like ours, and we ask all of our groups for a voluntary donation of £1 per person. This money goes directly to the Charity. If you would like more information about the Trust and its work please visit their website.
