Blog Snow in Sunny Spain? Why Schools are Skiing in Sierra Nevada

We’re very excited to be offering a new featured resort in an unlikely destination for school ski trips – SpainNow we know what you’re thinking… The words “Spain” and “Skiing” aren’t things you’d usually associate together, but let us tell you, we think the two are a match made in heaven.

Read on to find out why we’ve jumped at the chance to offer Sierra Nevada as a new destination for our school ski trips:

This resort is the most southerly ski area in Europe. Don’t let this fact put you off, the resort’s high altitude (an impressive 3,300 metres) means great snow is guaranteed. Generally speaking, altitude usually brings great views as standard, but are there any other resorts where you can see another continent from the mountain top? Take a look for yourself: we’d say the views of Africa, the Mediterranean Sea and Granada city are pretty special!

Access to this resort from the UK is by air as it’s a little far for a coach journey, but with Granada airport less than an hour away, this resort has one of the shortest transfer times you can get. Additionally, Malaga airport is only a couple of hours away, As most UK airports will have flights to one of these two, we’re sure you’ll agree this is quite a handy location for school ski trips. Should you need more options, there’s also Almeria and Seville airports within a reasonable distance. Let’s not forget that these airports are primarily used in summer months so flight prices during winter are very reasonable – not much more than some coach journeys.

Sierra Nevada benefits from a very long season generally starting in late November and running right through into early May. As you’d expect, being in Southern Europe the sun is often blazing. With an average of around 75% sunny days, be sure to bring along some sun cream!

We offer a great range of accommodation in Sierra Nevada in different parts of town and getting to the main gondola is easy. This unique resort has a unique solution in the form of a chairlift that takes you from one side of the village to the gondola station. It even has a stop half way so wherever your home is for the week, you’re never more than a few minutes’ walk from the lift. For added convenience, we won’t have your group carrying their ski equipment around – you can lock it away and leave it at the top of the gondola after lessons.

As well as the undoubtedly fantastic selection of pistes, school ski trips in Sierra Nevada offer a chance to immerse yourself in some Spanish culture. There are the village shops to explore and local cuisine to enjoy in resort, but that’s not all. Our trips can be combined with an overnight stay in Granada city. While there you could take your students on a city tour or to see the Alhambra Palace or the Parque de las Ciencias – an interactive museum!

Après Ski:

Your students are sure to love the truly special evening activities we can arrange while you’re skiing in Sierra Nevada. With astronomical observation & geology workshops, treasure hunts, and a mountain rollercoaster, this resort really offers something different. If you want to keep it simple, no problem, we can also offer swimming, a disco, cinema, pizza nights, and snow tubing to name a few others. Ask us about our après ski packages for more information.

With all the above on offer, we wouldn’t blame you for thinking that school ski trips here would be expensive, but there’s something else to know about this resort. The Spanish school holidays do not clash with the UK ones, meaning that we can still offer the most popular and peak weeks like February Half Term and Easter at great value for money.

With all of this considered, it’s really no surprise that there’s already plenty of excitement from our school groups about skiing in Sierra Nevada!
